What is ShopMCP?

ShopMCP is a Shopify connector for Claude AI — built by Anderseen Digital. It connects Claude directly to your Shopify store so you can create pages, update navigation, publish blog articles, edit theme files, and manage store content just by describing what you want in plain language. No coding required. No developer needed for routine updates.

It works as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) plugin inside Claude desktop's Cowork mode — meaning Claude can read and write to your store in real time, right from the conversation.

The Problem It Solves

Managing a Shopify store is surprisingly technical for non-developers. Even simple tasks — adding a new page, changing a nav link, editing a section's copy — require knowing where to click, understanding Liquid templates, or waiting for a developer to have time.

The common pain points:

  • Updating pages and content means navigating the theme editor, learning section settings, or editing Liquid code directly
  • Navigation changes require going into Online Store → Navigation, rebuilding menus item by item

Version History

v1.0 — First Release

Core read/write tools: get_asset, update_asset, list_assets, list_themes. Claude could fetch any theme file and publish changes back. The foundation for everything that followed.

v2.0 — Direct File Creation

Added create_asset — write brand new theme files (sections, snippets, templates, CSS) without needing a prior GET. Made creating full landing pages from scratch fast and reliable.

v3.0 — Content Management

Full blog and page tools: create/update/delete pages and articles, list blogs, create blogs. Write and publish content directly from Claude without touching the Shopify admin.

v4.0 — Media and Shop Info

Added AI image generation into the store, get_shop_info, copy_asset for duplicating files between themes, and list_menus for reading navigation structure.

v5.0 — Navigation Editing

Added update_menu — Claude can now restructure your Shopify navigation menus, add dropdown items, reorder links, and publish changes instantly via Shopify's GraphQL Admin API.

v6.0 — GraphQL Migration

Key tools migrated to Shopify's GraphQL API for faster responses and better reliability. Menu tools fully rebuilt with proper type handling for all Shopify link types.

v6.4 — Surgical Editing Tools

Three new tools that make precise edits possible without re-uploading entire files:

  • shopify_patch_asset — find-and-replace inside any cached theme file. Change one line in a 15kb file instantly.
  • shopify_append_to_asset — append CSS rules or Liquid blocks to any file without touching existing code.
  • shopify_check_network — tests upload endpoint reachability with clear step-by-step diagnostics.

How to Get ShopMCP

ShopMCP is available at shopmcp.net. It installs as a plugin inside Claude desktop's Cowork mode. Once connected to your store, Claude can start reading and editing immediately.
