What is MCP?
MCP is a new standard that lets AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini connect to outside services — your shop, your database, your email tool, anything with an API. This page explains what it is, and uses our own Shopify connector (ShopMCP) as a real example.
AI tools are smart. But on their own, they are stuck.
Claude can write, reason, summarise, and plan. But out of the box it has no way to actually do things — check your orders, send an email, update a record. It just talks. MCP changes that.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a standard introduced in 2024 by Anthropic — the company behind Claude — and quickly adopted by OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google (Gemini) in 2025. It is still quite new, but it is already becoming the default way to connect AI to the real world.
In plain English: an MCP server is a small piece of software that sits between an AI and a service. The AI asks "what orders came in today?" — the MCP server translates that into an API call, gets the answer, and passes it back. From your side, you just type and things happen.
MCP works for almost anything — shops, databases, email platforms, CRMs, internal tools. We build MCPs for all of these. But to make it concrete, the rest of this page uses our Shopify connector — ShopMCP — as the example.
Claude cannot reach your Shopify store on its own.
Your store has an API — a door that lets software talk to it. Claude has no key for that door. Without MCP, there is no connection.
Without MCP — Claude and your Shopify store cannot talk to each other.
